We invite you to discover what has made Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary the ultimate provider of creating healing experiences in the community. This section contains the heritage, vision, and the people behind Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary reputation of quality, sincerity, and trust. Newell Hoerling Mortuary has been serving the Centralia, Washington area with compassion and respect. Our deep roots in the community are a source of pride, as we grow side by side with the families we serve.

The Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary, located in Centralia, WA. has been in continuous operation as a funeral establishment in its present location on Pine Street since Edward Newell built it in 1907. Known then as the 'Newell Undertaking Company', it was purchased by Clarence G. Hoerling in, 1933 and has been family owned and operated since. A former streetcar conductor, Clarence Hoerling recevied his initial introduction and training at Sticklin Funeral Home and was employed by Edward Newell on September 15, 1922. The name was changed to Newell-Hoerling's in 1933 but dedication to serving families in Lewis and Thurston Counties, with integrity and compassion, continues to this day.
Edward Newell passed away on March 28, 1948. In the late 1920's through the 1960's Newell-Hoerling's also operated an ambulance service a practice common to mortuaries and funeral homes throughout the USA. Newell-Hoerling's was an early and active member and supporter of the Washington State Funeral Director's Association and Clarence Hoerling served as its President in 1951. He was the author of the History of the Washington State Funeral Directors Association, reprinted n there 2001 Convention Guide. He was instrumental in the establishment of the original Purple Cross Funeral Plan in 1948. Robert W. Hoerling graduated from Mortuary College in 1948, after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He became owner on January 1, 1974. His son James R. Hoerling, completed his degree in 1981, and is continuing the tradition of compassionate, affordable service. Clarence passed away on March 21, 1984. Currently, Newell-Hoerling's is the only locally owned funeral home in Centralia and Chehalis. It still is an 'Undertaking' company in the highest sense of the word. It has a history, rich in service and a future; worthy of its past.
