With grateful hearts, we celebrate the life of Jean Claire Opland, age 85, a radiant, kind, and loving woman who was welcomed home to Heaven on January 26, 2026. Jean was born on May 3, 1940 in Auburn, WA to Oddvin "Archie" and Mildred (French) Gunderson. Jean graduated from Enumclaw High School in 1958 and attended nursing school at Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot, ND. She graduated nursing school in 1961.
Jean was the very definition of sweetness and grace—someone whose presence made others feel seen and deeply cared for. A skilled and compassionate nurse, she touched thousands of lives through her work, offering not only medical care but comfort, wisdom, and genuine kindness to all she served. Caring for others was not just her profession; it was her calling. Jean practiced nursing for over 50 years. She retired as a registered nurse from Enumclaw Community Memorial Hospital at the age of 70.
Family was her greatest priority and her deepest joy. She was a loving and patient mother who devoted her life to her family with unwavering love and grace. She is survived by her beloved husband, Floyd, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage. Floyd and Jean met in Minot, ND while Jean was in nursing school and Floyd worked for the railroad. They were inseparable since their first date in 1960.
Jean is also survived by her five children Mike (Renee), Barb (Ron), Jeff (Christine), Jon (Sarah) and Annie (Jason); 13 grandchildren Alexis, Ryan, Elizabeth, McKenna, Kyle, Jakob, Kaitlyn, Ben, Brody, Christopher, Aidan, Braydon, and Emily; great-grandson Blake; and sister Karen Sohl.
Jean delighted in spoiling her grandchildren and sharing laughter, love, and unforgettable moments with each of them. Beneath her gentle wisdom was a playful, mischievous, childlike spirit that brought joy to all who knew her.
A devoted Christian, her faith was the foundation of her life. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, from her baptism in 1940 until her passing. She lived her faith daily, committed to sharing God’s love through the care, compassion, and generosity she showed to everyone she met.
Her legacy is one of love freely given, faith deeply lived, and joy generously shared. While she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched and the family who carries her love forward.
A celebration of her life will be held on February 12, 2026, at 11:30 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Enumclaw.
In memory of Jean, please consider making a donation in her name to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Her life was a testament to love, faith, service, and joy. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
