Joe E. Van Hoof Obituary (1942

Joe Van Hoof of Buckley passed from this life on September 19, 2017. He was seventy-five. The younger of two children, he was born April 3, 1942 to Al and Gladys Van Hoof. As a young boy he participated in Boy Scouts where his mother served as his scout leader. In high school Joe was a three sport letterman before joining the United States Navy in 1960. He served as an aircraft engine mechanic on the USS Ticonderoga earning a good conduct medal before being honorably discharged in 1963. Following his naval service Joe worked as a logger for Weyerhaeuser. Joe went on to become a journeyman carpenter and was a carpenter by trade for most of his adult life. A member of the Carpenters Union, he first worked for Algene Construction in Seattle before hanging his own shingle with Ron and Larry Kline. The trio specialized in residential homes. Throughout his life Joe's passion was cars. From stock car racing to customizing street rods, Joe loved all things cars. He could often be seen with his faithful canine companions cruising the streets or working in the shop. Joe was generous by nature and loved helping his friends. He is preceded in death by his son Jeff Van Hoof, his sister Margaret Hatch, and his parents Al and Gladys Van Hoof. He is survived by his daughter Terry Spencer, four grandchildren, and his former wife Diane Julius. Memorials may be made in Joe's name to the Treatment Advocacy Center. The Treatment Advocacy Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to helping reform the treatment of mental illness. A celebration of Joe's life will be held Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Weeks' Funeral Home in Buckley with burial following at the Buckley Cemetery.
