Soledad Palacios Porras Obituary (1914

Born in Jaro, IloIlo, in the Philippines. Coming from a large family, Soledad herself had six children with her husband Marcelo. She was the matriarch who kept the family together during wartime. During peace time she guided her family through the difficult emigration from the Philippines. She lived in Okinawa for over 2 years before settling in Seattle. She adjusted to the complexities of America which contrasted to the life she knew in Asia: Northwest drizzles replaced seasonal monsoons. Despite health problems which forced here to spend over two years in Louisiana, she managed to keep her family together. She was successful in giving all of her children a decent education in their prospective fields. She hardly left her beloved house on Lucile Street. However, she managed to see the mighty Mississippi River in New Orleans, Harvard University, Niagara Falls, and Mt. Rushmore. She received a congratulatory letter from Governor Booth Gardner on finally becoming an American citizen. Musically, she liked all genres, but was especially fond of Filipino Folk Songs and American Country and Western. Her favorite singer was Dolly Parton; her favorite song was "Ahay Kalisud" a folk song about unrequited love. She loved her dog Angel, peonies, roses and shrimp. Artistically, she preferred the political simpleness of Francisco Goya to the complexities of Picasso's Guermica. She made many friends and acquaintances during her four years in nursing homes including Marianne Jones and her daughter Mary Lynn Bean.
